Sen. Susan Collins gains further endorsements from prominent Republican figures as Democrats remain firm in their stance on Platner.
Throughout the 2026 Senate campaign, Platner held a lead over Collins. However, Platner’s Nazi tattoo, inflammatory internet commentary, and the recently uncovered sex scandal may shift momentum towards Collins. (Related: Graham Platner Causes Division In The Democratic Party )
Maine voters clearly value Collins’s independent streak, as she maintains her Senate seat held since 1997. JD Vance acknowledges this independence and states that she makes a “good fit” for Maine because of it.
“Platner is disqualifying. He shouldn’t be on the ballot,” Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters said. Gruters claims that if Platner secures the nomination, his extremism makes a majority win impossible, giving Collins an advantage.
Republicans and Democrats are fiercely competing for the Maine Senate seat. A win for either could shift national power.
Several Democratic commentators have criticized Platner’s behavior, but plan to back him anyway. Sunny Hostin of “The View” called him “a liar, a racist, an antisemite,” despite this, she continues to support him as the candidate for the Senate seat.
Jill Filipovic, a Democratic journalist, claims that Platner’s history of poor decision-making does not impact his ability to perform well in the Senate… where he would be making decisions.
Susan Collins won reelection in 2020 despite her opponent having an advantage in nearly every public poll leading up to Election Day; she may do it again. Outspoken Democratic figures support Platner, but voters must decide whether they will compromise their principles for a win.
