Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained a Cumberland County Jail correctional officer for the third time over illegal status in America.
Officer Bill Bassikissa Bounguiena acquired legal work authorization until 2030 and was beyond reproach, according to Cumberland County District Attorney Jackie Sartoris. However, the Department of Homeland Security presented evidence displaying a criminal history, including domestic violence, and overstaying his visa.
Another officer detained, Gratien Milandou-Wamba, entered America on a nonimmigrant visitor’s visa and acquired a job at the jail. After attempting to unlawfully purchase a firearm, immigration authorities were alerted to his illegal status and detained him. Milandou-Wamba remains in custody, but continues to work towards gaining legal asylum status.
The Heritage Foundation advocates for consistent upholding of the Constitution and rule of law, so that entry into the United States remains fair and just. Under the Biden administration, few restrictions on entry into America resulted in many dangerous individuals gaining access to the country.
Policy experts emphasize that maintaining safety requires transparency between federal and state governments, strong border security, rigorous interior enforcement, and an integrated federal immigration system that collaborates with the states.
