Portland International Jetport announced significant expansion to its air service offerings on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, with news of two new seasonal airline routes designed to increase connectivity and boost economic activity in southern Maine. The airport will launch service to Washington DC and Philadelphia beginning in March 2026, marking the first major route expansion at the airport in three years.
Jetport Director Brandon Lister announced the new routes during a press conference attended by city officials, business leaders, and representatives from the airline partners. The new service comes as the regional airport continues to recover passenger traffic following pandemic-related reductions and positions Portland as an increasingly attractive hub for regional business and leisure travel.
New Route Details and Schedule
Southwest Airlines will operate the new Washington DC route with daily service beginning March 15, 2026, providing Portland-area travelers direct access to the nation’s capital. The Philadelphia route, operated by American Airlines, will commence on March 22, 2026, with five weekly flights supporting business and leisure travel to the greater Philadelphia region.
“These new routes represent significant economic development for the Portland area,” said Mayor Mark Harmon during the announcement ceremony. “Direct connections to major business centers will attract corporate investment, enhance tourism, and provide our residents with improved travel options.”
The new routes are expected to generate approximately 45 to 50 new jobs at the airport over the next two years, including positions in customer service, ground operations, and airport administration. Local hospitality and ground transportation businesses anticipate increased demand for their services as passenger traffic grows.
Competitive Advantage and Market Analysis
Airport officials conducted extensive market analysis indicating strong demand for direct service to Washington DC and Philadelphia from southern Maine. Portland’s geographic position on I-95 provides excellent access for regional travelers extending to parts of New Hampshire and Massachusetts seeking convenient air transportation options.
“The data was compelling,” noted Lister. “Hundreds of our passengers currently drive to Boston Logan Airport or fly through connecting hubs. These direct routes will capture that demand and keep passengers close to home.”
The Jetport also announced recruitment efforts to attract additional airline partners to further expand service. Discussions with several regional carriers regarding potential seasonal or year-round service to Charlotte, Nashville, and New York LaGuardia are underway, with decisions expected by mid-2026.
Economic Impact Projections
The Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce estimates the new routes will generate more than $25 million in annual economic activity for the region, including hotel stays, restaurant dining, and ground transportation services. The airport’s economic impact modeling suggests passenger traffic will increase by approximately 12 percent within the first full year of operation.
Construction of additional gate infrastructure and terminal expansion will commence in early 2026 to accommodate the increased passenger volume, with estimated completion by spring 2027. The $18 million capital project will be funded through a combination of federal grants, airport revenue bonds, and state transportation funding.
