The founding fathers featured in the historic play ‘1776’ have been replaced by socialist politicians such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a Maine public high school.
The play, directed by Casio Bay High School teacher Gwyneth Jones Nicholson, will cast “gender and race blind.”
“I’m directing 1776 at my (very progressive) high school next year, casting gender and race blind,” Nicholson wrote on a Facebook post. “I’m considering updating the costumes to be modern day and pairing the characters with modern day members of Congress.”
In his post, Nicholson added that thinking of casting “Bernie Sanders” as Benjamin Franklin, and Ocasio Cortez as John Adams. (RELATED: How a Portland Home Care Operator Milked Maine’s Medicaid Program for Over $1 Million)
Nicholson concluded the post by asking members of the community, specifically other show directors or educators, to come forth with ideas.
“This is a concept I am just playing with right now, so any thoughts are welcome,” she wrote. “And if you have directed the show, feel free to share any helpful tips.”
Nicholson is one of the many high school teachers in the country known for pushing radical political ideologies, specifically progressive views, into their teachings. (RELATED: Maine Governor Janet Mills Loses More Ground as Platner Surges to 35-Point Lead)
In January, the New York Post reported that David Whitman, a teacher in the private Brooklyn Technical High School, swapped lessons on Steinbeck and Hemingway for teachings on gender fluidity and anti-Israel propaganda, outraged parents told The Post.
Last fall, the Washington Examiner reported that the largest teachers union in the country, the National Educators Association, propelled ideologically driven and openly partisan materials used to disparage Republicans, advance transgender advocacy, and “mobilize our progressive base” during a recent training.
“The right has exploited ignorance about transgender people… to advance anti-trans attacks,” one document reads. “Republicans in state legislatures have increasingly turned to anti-transgender rhetoric and legislation as a powerful complement to their arsenal of racist dog whistles… they have paired these attacks with fear-mongering about Critical Race Theory, mobilizing their base with a potent mix of racist and transphobic tropes.”
