Residents recently gathered at the United Technologies Center for the first-ever citizen’s assembly to address the flaws within the education system. Lawmakers created the event to gather research and data on how best to move forward. The assembly struck an optimistic note to start, discussing an uptick in engagement among concerned citizens.
“One thing I think is incredibly important here is that you see people looking around the room; people have hope,” said Jennifer Chace, the Assistant Director of the Center for Education Policy. “People feel like they matter; they’re standing up a little bit, they’re engaging, they’re walking right up to legislators and asking questions. So, my biggest goal for this event is that people walk away feeling their voice matters, and they have hope for a better future.”

A persistent drop in birth rates impacts current student enrollment and state funding allocations. Since 2000, the state has witnessed a steady reduction in its youth demographic. This shift necessitates school closures and personnel cuts, driving officials to seek adaptive strategies that best benefit future generations.
Youth apprenticeships and careers will receive several thousand dollars in grants from Maine’s Department of Labor (MDOL) and Department of Education (DOE). The Career Pathways Program plans to donate $250K to different organizations, like school administrative units, high schools, technical education centers, adult education programs, and community organizations.

Maine’s Department of Labor also hosted a two-day working session focused on expanding youth apprenticeship, strengthening career pathways, and better aligning Maine’s education and workforce systems to meet the needs of young people, employers, and communities across the state.
Education reform is gaining momentum in the state, but it remains to be seen what ideas will receive popular support and long-term funding.
