There are a variety of ways available for residents of Maine to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. These celebrations foster national pride and a greater appreciation for America’s independence and history.
State law established the Maine Semiquincentennial Commission in 2023. The commission appointed members who “shall develop and coordinate the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America… through educational and historical events, activities and programs throughout the State.”
Maine began celebrating the United States semiquincentennial in April 2025. The eighteen-month initiative allows citizens of Maine to understand the “critical role the District of Maine and its people played in the founding of our nation.”
Citizens have been able to read a 1776 copy of the Declaration of Independence, one of only 26 surviving Dunlap Broadsides. Organizers have toured it throughout Maine’s sixteen counties over the past year.
The Maine Historical Society will be hosting a Fourth of July celebration at the Portland City Hall Plaza that will “include a community reading of the Declaration of Independence by dignitaries and well-known Mainers; music; and opportunities to view the Declaration of Independence.”
The festivities will not end on the Fourth of July, as the Maine Historical Society will keep the Pathfinder exhibition open until December, allowing citizens to learn more about the effect of the Revolution on individuals who lived through it.
