Dozens gathered in Lewiston at the beginning of June to discuss growing concerns about youth violence. Many citizens express frustration at juvenile crime and the seeming lack of consequences. There have been sixteen shootings in Lewiston this year, ten of which were juvenile.
Statistics from the first half of 2026 show that more than half of the juvenile referrals to correctional facilities are repeat offenders. Youth criminal activity ranges from drug and alcohol abuse to murder.
Soft-on-crime approaches lay the groundwork for juvenile criminal activity. Local leaders unintentionally send the message to youths: “There won’t be consequences for their actions.” The issue continues to rage on and will do so until legitimate action is taken.
A seventeen-year-old on probation, charged with nearly a dozen prior crimes, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm, falsifying physical evidence, carrying a concealed weapon, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, violating probation, and breaking curfew.
